In 1996, Columbus Hockey Limited was formed by five investors who submitted an application to found a professional team to participate in the National Hockey League. This team soon became known as the Columbus Blue Jackets. The Columbus Blue Jackets get their name from patriotism, pride and the rich Civil War history in the state of Ohio. It is now a professional ice hockey team and qualified for the Stanley Cup playoffs for the first time in 2009.
