J. Fred Schmidt was born in Frankfurt, Germany before immigrating to Columbus and becoming well known country wide for his prepared meats. He also began an authentic German restaurant which is now famous among the locals of Columbus. The same recipes that J. Fred Schmidt originally used in his kitchen are still used today. Schmidt’s is known as one of only a few German restaurants in the area, so it tends to be a popular site in German Village. As well as being a restaurant, it also includes a gift shop that sells homemade sweets and German toys that are hard to find in the states. Schmidt’s is best known for its massive creme puffs and its food truck that makes appearances at most local festivals. This is one place that should not be overlooked.
